Friendly Game:

Midland Wolves vs Morning Glory

This week we have arranged a friendly game to keep us match sharp. Opponents are Morning Glory, who is leading division 2 this season. Some of us should be familiar with them as we played them twice last season. They like to pass the ball around the middle of the park, and main threat is their tall striker, who is both a physical presence as well as a good finisher.

As this is a friendly, the emphasis on this game is to give players a chance to play, to be assessed for players on trial, and more importantly, the way we play. The result is secondary. I wish to see us play well as a team, show co-ordination, teamwork, creative play and play with guts and passion.

Match Report:
Midland Wolves FC vs Social Team
HT: 0-0
FT: 0-0
MW Goals: Nil
MW Assist: Nil
MW MVP: Yee Poo
Cards: Nil

Line-up: Gabriel, PC, Dansen, Jason, Yeepoo, Daniel (Gunawan), Sebas (Jack), Kelvin (Yu Xiang/Leonard), Melvin Tan (Edwin), JJ (Shawn), Weihao

Starting Formation: 4-4-2

Learning Points:
- Wolves first goaless game...ever. Was not a good game, in terms of gameplay. Opponents dominated much of the game, and having more chances then what we created. Moreover, opponents played with only 10 men for the first quarter, and we couldn't capitalise on the numerical advantage.

- Goalie: Melvin and Gabriel took turns to be keeper each half, both put in decent performances, though Gabriel need to work on his goal kicks. The direction and distance is very inconsistant.

- Defence: Our one shining light is our defence. Defence coped well with the pressure and assault. Although we still gave opponents too much space with slack marking during corner kicks. Outstanding performances in defence were Gabriel and Yee Poo. Gabriel played centreback in the 2nd half and did an excellent job. Yee Poo was fantastic, winning shoulder challenges, interceptions, blocks and stopped 2 shots on the goal-line. He managed to outwit and outplay the opponent right midfielder for much of the game. But started to fade in the last 20 minutes. Need to work on match conditioning and pace.

- Midfield: Our midfield was poor and un-co-ordinated. In the first half struggled to make an impact as panic play resulted in giving away possession cheaply, and mis-passes were too common. Left and right midfielder pushed up too much to recieve the ball efficiently, thus ruling themselves out for much of the half. Did not follow instructions to dribble with the ball to create width in attack, instead keep playing to the overly-congested centre mid. Centre-mid was doing ok winning possession, Sebas and Daniel doing the sheparding job well. But was not so good in distribution and lacking creative passes in attack. When Shawn came on in the middle, he provided more creative options and ability to slow the game down with good control. In 2nd half, Dansen was doing well until Gunawan came on to partner him in midfield, where Dansen started to play too much of an attacking role, leaving a big hole between midfield and defence. Dansen can improve by sticking to his role and improving his midfield positioning play. Lack of communication and support all-round in general for our midfield.

- Offence: Our front line of JJ and Weihao lacks communication and was pretty much out of the game with a lack of service. However, even when the service came, seldom threatened until Shawn came on to provide depth in attack. Weihao played too deep and dropped too far and this resulted in the opponents being able to play a high defensive line. Weihao being the most forward player, needs to be able to play a high offensive line to peg back the opponent's defence and create breathing room for our defence. JJ needs to improve his touch and positioning play by learning to drift wide to recieve the ball instead of dropping deep into the congested centre mid. Leonard in the second half was lacking sharpness, most likely due to lack of sleep. Eitherway Leonard needs to really improve his match fitness as his style of play required him to be very fit to run with the ball.

-Trialists: Edwin was only so-so in the right mid position. Tends to drift to the centre-mid position, which means he can improve by learning to stick to his position. He showed good pace and determination though. Played much better in previous game as centre-mid. Gunawan showed good touches and ball control, but his lack of pace resulted in him being second when challenging for loose balls.

- On the whole, we need to improve by leaps and bounds if we are to win our last game for this season. For some reason, our attacking play has been rather weak this season and definately needs less flair but more efficiency. Wing-play often is the key to penetration, and wingers need to really stick to the edge of the flanks and create width in attack. They also need to have the confidence to take on defenders in one-to-one situations.

--------------------------------------------------
League Game:
Midland Wolves vs Club De Futbol

This is our last game for this season. Phoenix has did the unlikely and won 4 games in a row, hence putting them 1 point above us with 3 games to go. That leaves us in 7th position, same as last season and this is not acceptable. Hence this game against Club De Futbol is a MUST win game for pride, for all we have accomplished this season, for the players who have sacrificed, played and left our team this year. Club de Futbol is not a difficult team to play. In fact, they hardly are able to create any decent chances through open play. We have to cut out giving away needless freekicks and corner kicks and we can contain them. They are dangerous in set-pieces and the best defence against that is not to concede any set-pieces in the first place. Their defence is weak, as evidenced by the 45 goals they conceded, second only to WWFC. So we will create chances, but our attackers MUST be clinical, cruel and finish them off.

Match Report:
Midland Wolves vs WW FC
FT: 4-1
HT: 2-1
MW Scorers: Weihao, Jason, Amardeep (x2)
MW Cards: Jason (Y), Fabian (Y), Syafiq (Y)
MW MVP: Amardeep

Report written by Dansen
1st half lineup

Formation: 3-5-2

Goalie: Gabriel

Defence: Vincent (right), Dansen (centre), Yee Po (left)

Midfield: Daniel (right), Amardeep (centre), Sebastian (defensive mid), JJ (centre), Jason (left)

Attack: Leonard, Wenjie

Subs: Syafiq, Kelvin, Fabian, Wei Hao, Mark

I remember once learning something from the historical Sun Tzu Art Of War - “There is no greater disaster than underestimating your enemy. Underestimating your enemy means loosing your greatest assets.” This is something I carry on the field and off the field. Never underestimate anyone for the element of surprise is always around the corner.

Going into the game with heavy lose last week still sour in the minds of the wolves and the complacency that was lurking of winning the current opponents in the previous meet was both unhealthy.

With the mysterious disappearance of Jack due to him taking ill, the return of Ramesh saw a more attacking formation of 3-5-2. Game kicked off to a slow start, with Wolves conceding an early goal. Opponent’s striker turned Yee Po and sprinted towards goal. Dansen was too late in making a challenge this was also due to indecisive awareness, before opponent poked the ball into the net with Gabriel beaten who was clearly try to cover much ground as possible.. Images of previous week’s 4-0 trashing hovered around Wolves’ head. Seeing how nervy Yee Po was, opponent attacked more on the left, before he was spared the torture, with Fabian coming in for him not long after. Vincent was holding up just fine but he could have done better as he was just winning balls but never using his trademark right foot with switching plays.

Wolves were 1-0 down, but never stopped fighting and believing. On our left wing we had trialist and clearly the lack of communication and most importantly unable to gel into the team made his presence rather lackluster nevertheless potential is definitely there as he chased every ball he lost. Ramesh made further change, with Daniel coming off for Wei Hao. Leonard was shifted to right mid and Wei Hao taking over his place in attack. Wolves were occasionally playing beautiful football with strings of passes, but midfield still guilty of just pumping the balls up and not playing the ball on the ground. Jason was constant thorn despite having horrendous defender who always went for Jason. Just like many of the wavy runs he did this resulted in a goal. Once he was in the box the defenders were just cautious not bring him down in the box this allowed Jason to make square ball into the center of the penalty box which came of the opponent’s defender into his own net. Our center mid was not performing up to expectation with the exception of JJ was running tirelessly. Amardeep and Sebas lost several opportunities to bring the ball instead always succumbing to pass to the nearest player. Passing is always good but it does not promote attacking play. Both the players were not playing to the strength. Instead of attacking role we had adapt defensive. With another newbie in the team,Wei Hao provided what every strikers should do have. Always lurking around and getting on loose balls. Although always slow in receiving balls from the team but his sense of space is always good sight. Our second goal came courtesy of Wei Hao. Wenjie’s shot from the right was parried away by the opposing goalie only for Wei Hao to pounce on the loose ball. True predatory instinct indeed! Scoreline remained at 2-1 till halftime.

Half Time Points

· STOP Pumping the balls

· Instead of always passing run with the ball; this encourages complete attacking football as a unit. Running with ball should not be only limited to wingers. This is critical for Center Mid and Defensive Mid.

· Wingers have to be aware of the surrounding; running with the ball with a goal is waste of energy. Awareness. Know where you fellow is all the time.

· Do not commit to tackles; contain while the wolves will be able to provide suppressing cover.

2nd half line-up

Goalie: Gabriel

Defence: Fabian (right), Mark (centre), Sebastian (left)

Midfield: Leonard (right), Amardeep (centre), Dansen (defensive mid), JJ (centre), Kelvin (left)

Attack: Wei Hao, Wenjie

Subs: Jason, Vincent, Yee Po, Syafiq, Daniel

Wolves played much better in the 2nd half. Major changes were made during the break. Dansen was effective and fully utilized playing in defensive midfield role. Presences of larger player always provide a psychological effect on the opponents. Bearing in mind all the attacking players were small stature placing Mark as the last man did the trick. He played with some excellent offside traps despite raising his worrying thoughts being unable to cope with a last man role but with Sebas and Fabian by his side it sure was helping his morale. Leonard was constantly running at opponent’s defence, but could have done better at times by passing the ball to team-mates in better position. He did win a penalty as he was tugged and tripped while inside the penalty box. We missed a glorious chance to mount pressure on opponent psychologically as Wenjie blasted the ball over the bar from the penalty spot. By this time, opponent tried to contain the danger of Leonard’s speed by assigning a defender to man mark him. He was taking a bit of knocks before Ramesh decided to switch him to the left wing, with Kelvin shifting to the right. Syafiq came on for Kelvin after some time; however his reign on the field didn’t last long as he was taken off with a horrible two-footed challenge from the back on the opponent out of frustration. He was lucky to escape with a yellow card. Syafiq did show some moments of presence on the field but most time it was the opponents who felt his physical side. Unfortunately it was tactical move that he was replaced by Jason.

Wolves were made to toil and sweat as the opponent applied immense pressure with the scoreline remaining at 2-1. With Amardeep’s age catching up, he had to come off with Vincent coming on. Vincent moved to right back, Fabian to the left and Sebastian pushing up to midfield. Leonard’s fatigue was starting to show and Kelvin came back into the field. An injury to JJ deep into 2nd half however forced Amardeep to return to action. What an action he got as he bagged his first 2 goals for the club! First goal came courtesy of an backheel assist from Jason as he laid the ball for him just at the edge of the penalty box and with a sweet strike of the outside foot, the ball whizzed into the top left corner. This is was the goal that killed the game as the opponents were no longer pressing. Their defense has pushed up till the half way line. Second goal came when opponent’s heavy touch near the middle of the pitch was intercepted by him and he raced towards goal skipping past a defender before applying a cool finish to beat the keeper at the edge of the penalty box, sending the ball into the bottom right corner. With the score at 4-1 there was no way the opponent was going to fight back late into the game. Daniel was sent in to kill some of the remaining minutes. Referee’s final whistle was indeed what the oppnesnt was looking for as Wolves has just moved up geared. IF we had another 10mins of game we would have scored more nevertheless it was well fought game.

Points of interest:

· No need to commit needless fouls when there is no danger (shoving of opponent from the back, kicking opponent from the back). We were lucky to escape unpunished as opponent didn’t take their chances with set piece. Remember Wolves all the cards we obtain this season will be used to dock our points. So even if you win all the remaining games but gaining cards will dock our points

· Clear instructions need to be given during wall formations. There should only be 3 voices. One in the wall who shall tell the rest of the wall what to do. The other is the lastman who should organize everything behind the wall. Lastly the GK. Communication is the key to the wall and set piece defending.

· Our weakness at defending corners and free kicks still present, fortunate for us, as opponent didn’t manage to capitalize on that. Always have assigned players for specific roles.

· Never put your team down in front the opponent. Communication helps but most importantly encouragement is a necessity; always refrain from insulting your own players he wears the same uniform and fights the same battle. Lead by example.

· Overall we had fought hard for easy game but the as they say it the fight that matters so I hope next week you will have the same ferocity when you challenge the team on top of the table.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
League Game:

This week our game is Midland Wolves FC vs Sambal SK

This is the one opponent we have not played yet in the league, wven though half the season is over. They are a mid table team, with a few points above us and games in hand. They are an unknown quantity but from statistics, there is nothing remarkably strong or weak about them, pretty much a balanced team. Hence we need to approach this game slightly cautious, but at the same time play our usual attacking style. Key points for this game is we need to maintain the focus on not conceding any goals in the first half, especially in the opening 30 mins. Special attention to be paid to defending set-pieces, and the best cure is to prevent giving away freekicks or cornerkicks needlessly in the first place, especially around the penalty area.

Another thing to emphasize is that we are DANGEROUSLY close to flirting with disaster with our match discipline, both on the field and off it. TOO MANY YELLOW and RED this season. We can take the professional/tactical fouls, but the needless ones like vulgarities, dissent is POINTLESS and we can be punished for it. The other thing to note is the issue of punctuality. Please be PUNCTUAL for the game. We have given 25mins allowance by telling you to come early, so if those that turn up at 9.10, 9.20 are essentially 40-50mins late. That is not acceptable.

Match Report:

Midland Wolves vs Phoenix FC

FT: 1-1

HT: 1-1

Goals: Jason

Assist: Shawn

Cards: Wenjie, Kelvin, PC

MW MVP: Jason

Line-up: Edward, PC, Vincent (Dansen), Fabian (Alastair), Sebas, Deep (JJ), Kelvin (Daniel), Leonard, Jason, Shawn (Gabriel), Wenjie (Syafiq)

Formation: 4-4-1-1

Last Sunday we faced off against our old foe, Phoenix FC for the fourth time. So far our record has been 2 wins and 1 draw against them and all were close games. We set off with a team ready for a tough fight, anticipating a hard battle in midfield. Early game was even-stevens, with both teams sharing equal possession and making probing runs, though Wolves were the ones who looked more threatening. Most of our assaults come from the wings, with Jason on the right in fine form with his control and dribbling, and Leonard doing his usual charging runs on the left. It was pretty much even until around 30 mins or so into the game, Wolves won a free kick on the right side of the pitch. Shawn look poised to try a direct shot on the freekick, but he fooled everyone when he laid off a pass instead to Jason, who was open and planted a dipping shot over the helpless Phoenix keeper. Great innovation! 1-0! Seems like we learnt something tactically from playing our last week's opponents AFC haha. All seems well for Wolves, but the joy was short lived as 10 minutes later, Phoenix hit back with an equaliser. Their right winger who was left unmarked by the out-of position Sebas, managed to cut in pass both Dansen and PC, and fire a shot pass Edward. 1-1 into half-time.

Some changes made, most significantly, Gabriel on for Shawn. In the 15 minutes he was on, Gabriel terrorised Phoenix defence with his bulldozing run and control. He came close when he collected a pass from midfield nonchalantly, flicked the ball pass his marker back to himself with his first touch, and volleyed a shot that was parried by the Phoenix keeper. The rebound came back to Leonard, whose one-time half volley hit the cross bar and bounced out of play. That was close. Another close call came when a corner kick was nearly converted by Sebas's header. Phoenix too came close a couple of times as time passes by and Wolves' defence starts to tire out, but it comes to nuaght and the match ended in a draw.

Learning Points:

- For the 2nd game in a row, we managed to take the lead, but failed to defend it. Defensive players need to keep their focus regardless of the score. There was a lack of depth in defence as the defensive line looked flat. Fullbacks need to follow instructions and only press in the defensive third, otherwise they will be caught out of position easily.

- Kudos to Shawn and Jason for the freekick.

- Jason won MVP for he showed excellent touch and penetration, generally good passing sense and accuracy, and capped a good performance with a goal.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
League Game:

Midland Wolves FC vs Club De Futbol FC

Originally we were scheduled to play Sambal SK, but it seems they cannot make it, hence we will play Club de Futbol in a replay instead. Club de Futbol, we played them in a single half before, and got a game postponed due to bad weather. So finally we get to play them in what I would call, "BX's revenge game". Club de Futbol currently is languishing in the bottom 2 along with WWFC. They have a poor defensive record and an unimpressive attack. But still we conceded one thru a freekick wehen we played them the last time round, so we need to be careful not to give away freekicks around our box this time. They are a very physical team, but they lacked focus and co-ordination. We need to play the effective, simple ground passing game we used against them the first time round and we should dominate the game. Our forwards need to be clinical in finishing and show no mercy. We need the goal difference in our favour and if we can score 3 or more against them, it would be ideal.

We have a lack of forwards in this game, so some attacking midfielders may double as a forward or we may play a formation to dominate proceedings in midfield. Look sharp for this game boys, this is a MUST win game and we MUST take all 3 points with a good number of goals, so that we can have an easier time the later part of May.
