After the 4-0 demolition of Bochap, this was the game that would make Midland Wolves' season up or down. Filled with anticipation and anxiety, Wolves approached the game with cautious confidence after the one week break, recalling the goalfest that resulted in 9 goals the last time the Wolves met Hougang North. The game kicked off with Wolves playing a wide formation, planning to do the damage on the wings. However it was Hougang that settled into the game earlier, creating more penetration and some nervous moments for the Wolves. Wolves struggled to find the flow going, and though it seems that half of Hougang's team are different players this encounter, their defence are made of mainly the same group. Wolves had some good chances but nothing clear cut. PC was having a bad day with his offside calls off the timing a couple of times, creating some panic at the Wolves defence. Wolves' central midfield was disorganised, with Welson and Sebas not communicating sufficiently to provide cover for each other, and JJ's touch letting him down several times. His one moment of brillance was when Rahim broke through the defence and pssed the ball to JJ. JJ managed to weave his way pass 3 defenders but somehow couldn't find the shot and the attacking chance was lost. The Wolves' main penetration came from the wings, with Yu Xiang making determined runs down the flanks, but can't find the final pass into the box. Rahim showed sparks of flair and creativity, doing the unpredictable and creating problems for Hougang's defence. The first goal came from a combination of the wing midfielders, with Yu Xiang laying the ball for Rahim, whose through ball found JJ amidst the disarray that was the Hougang's defence. JJ's "shot" was a gentle rolling ball, but with the Hougang keeper out of position, Hougang's defenders were in a state of confusion as to who should clear the ball and the ball trickled into the net. 1-0! Wolves celebration was half muted as they know the job is not done and just as predicted Hougang managed to equalise several minutes later with a well taken curling shot. 1-1. Half time.

Wolves know changes need to be made, as the scorching weather and long grass were sapping the stamina out of the Wolves. Yu Xiang and Rahim off for BX and Leonard. The game restarted the same way it ended, with Hougang North coming closer to scoring with the Wolves defence struggling a bit. We knew Hougang North would pull all the stops to try to win this game as this game is their key game of the season, and they gave us a game. Wolves looked edgy during the corners and one such attack had Gabriel at full stretch keepin out a pointblank shot with a reflex save. Before long, Hougang took the lead through a corner kick and the Wolves were down 1-2. Wolves attacks were clearly not working out, and the defence looks fragile, hence more changes were made. Shawn came in for PC at the back, and later on, Dip making his trial debut for Jason, with Sebas dropping to the fullback position. That seemed to have stablized the team somewhat and Wolves started to assert themselves. BX found himself in a great situation after breaking through the defence but his shot rifled and beat the keeper but not the crossbar. Wenjie came close too when he beat his marker and tried to chip the keeper, but the keeper managed to get his hands on the ball. Leonard got our equaliser when after some good work by Calvin to get the loose ball and he managed to feed the ball to Leonard, who managed to just edge pass his marker and released a fantastic lob that caught the keeper in no man's land. 2-2. The goal spurred the Wolves to surge forward and Leonard had the final chance when eh dribbled past his marker once again after some good work by trialist Mervin, but he went for glory instead with Wenjie free at the edge of the box. His shot swerved away from the goal. Full time. Derby game shares the spoils between the 2 north east neighbours.

Points to note:
- Wolves' MOM was a tough call, as there wasn't anyone who was particularly outstanding throughout the game, but upon evaluation, the player that made the most impact was Leonard, who not only got the equaliser that prevented the defeat, but he was very vocal througout and supportive and encouraging. Worth mentioning too are Rahim who was the most creative player but his fitness let him down, Shawn who did well to help stem the flow of attacks, and Gabriel who if not for him the Wolves might be even further behind.
- Wolves must remember what we did in training. We conceded from a set piece again. As Jack always mentioned, while we should enjoy ourselves during training sessions, the lessons learnt must be taken seriously, because it is during practice we can prepare for the competitive games. If we don't take training seriously, then the mistakes we make we will continue to make them. A smart person learns from other's mistakes. A fool makes mistakes and learns from them. An idiot makes the same mistake over and over and doesn't learn his lesson.
- We must remember the key to victory lies in possession and passing. We don't do enough of this. We need to create passing angles by off the ball movement to support each other, regardless of the weather or conditions. Football is a team game, we need to get our act together and play as a team.

-------------------------------------------------------
League Game:
There is a league game this week. There is also a fixture change and we will be playing against Morning Glory FC.

Notes: Morning Glory tops the table now, they also have the best defensive record, and are currently undefeated. They are a tough team to beat, but are not impossible to beat. It's up to us to put a dent in their record. The last result we had was 4-1 loss to them in soaking wet conditions. If the heavens permit, we'll play them in dry weather so we can really see how we will fare against the top team. They will be the yardstick as to how good our team are. We know we have the potential. The coaches have seen our potential. We must believe and play to our potential and play as a team.

Tactically, their main source of threat come from 2 areas. One, their main dangerman cum target man, their No. 99. Tall and physical, we need to nullify his aerial prowess. Set piece is especially a danger to us. Via open play his physical runs must be stopped. All their attacks will inevitably feed the ball to him, so either we cut out the supply or mark him out. Their number two danger is their playmaker. He tends to drop deep in midfield, sometimes all the way to defence. He is very mobile and very difficult to mark due to his mobility and areas he cover. While it is foolish to waste manpower to man mark a player who has the tactical mind to know how to pull players out of position, the way to nullify his influence is to play a pressing frontline, meaning our forwards and midfielders need to press hard whenever he is on the ball, each time with a supporting covering player. Simplified, we play zonal in midfield with a "sweeper" in midfield.
Their weakness in defence seems to be their left wing, so we will need to focus our penetration there and switch play when it gets crowded.

League Game

http://www.d2dsports.com/category/football-leagues/sunday-9am-league/

--------------------------------------------------
League Game:
There is a league game this week. We will be playing against Hougang North FC.

Notes: EXPECT A HARD GAME. Hougang North is 2 points behind us with a game in hand, and they must win to overtake us, so we can expect them to go all out to get a result as this is their last chance. This is a must win game for us, once we win we will be 80% certain of 6th position, and along our goal of reaching 5th. Previous result was a 6-3 win. It was a goalfest but we were too careless to concede that many. We conceded due to lack of concentration in defensive marking and slow release of the ball.

How to win this game is to keep our composure and keep our passing game going. The last time we did this we dominated the half. Their weakness is their defence, especially their right back where Yu Xiang, Ray and Calvin totally destroyed them there last time round. If they are using the same players we need to take advantage of this. They deal poorly with overlapping runs by fullbacks and off the ball running from deep in centre midfield. So penetration via wings and one-touch passing in midfield will be our key. We will be expecting chances to come our way so our forwards need to take their chances to create an early advantage and dominance psychologically. Defensive wise, their wingers are physically strong, though not all that pacy, and their attacks mainly come from the sides, so our fullbacks need to take note. Their main striker is possibly their most dangerous player, but if we cut out the supply to him, we should be fine. So that means we have to defend from midfield down.

IT was a cooling Sunday morning with cloudy skies overhead, but that did not dampen the pre-game anticipation. This is a crucial game for the Wolves, a must-win if Wolves hope to try to climb to 5th on the table and be one step closer to being relegation safe. Bochap lies on the 5th spot, with 1 game in hand over the Wolves who lie in 7th. The last game was played in a short and wide pitch, and a lucky penalty from Bochap secured a narrow win over the Wolves the last encounter. But deep down Wolves know they can beat this team and that belief remains.

Wolves' strategy for this game is similar to the last game against Chinatown, that is to control the midfield, and penetration via the wings where the Bochap's chink in the armour is. Defensive wise, Wolves were boosted by the return of Vice-Captain Dansen. The match kicked off with neither side dominating, as both sides were scrappy in midfield fighting for possession while trying to settle down first. Before long, Wolves settled in earlier and started to apply the pressure on Bochap. Bochap's main threat was their tall defensive midfielder who was launching most of their attacks. Noticing this, coach Jack instructed Welson and Shawn to man-mark him in midfield and defence respectively to nullify his influence. The tactics worked partially, keeping his attacking influence to minimum, while the tall player started to play deeper in defence. A lot of the early action was happening at the Wolves' left wing, where Bochap triple teamed to try to penetrate our wing, but Dansen was there with Welson to handle the threats, just marginally keeping them out though. On the right wing, Jason was having an easier time with the ever aggressive Sebas backing him. There were many throw-ins but was wasted by Wolves on the right as Jason's throw went straight to the opponents. However, BX and Leonard, wingers on the right and left respectively, were very lively and causing problems to Bochap. BX was active in the first 20 mins, but was stifled there after when Bochap changed a faster fullback to mark him. Leonard was the key threat, with his marker having a hard time trying to keep up with the physical Leonard. Wenjie was having a good day too, when he found himself through the defence in an attacking move, but he hesitated and the chance to shoot was gone. On the other end, Bochap were limited to sporadic counter attacks mostly through the Wolves left wing, and their fast striker was causing some problems to PC with his pace, but the commanding Gabriel was there to mop up. BX had a chance when he beat 2 players with his penetrating run, but he too hestitated to shoot and chose to play a through pass to JJ who was caught offside. Welson had a chance when he dribbled past the left back but his curling shot was just wide of the post. It was still nervy until a moment of Wenjie magic broke the deadlock. The combatitive Welson won a ball in midfield and with excellent vision released a diagional through pass from the left to right wing. Wenjie was there to collect, and with his first touch, controlled the ball and beat his marker at the same time at the edge of the box. He brought the ball in and blasted a shot beyond the helpless keeper. 1-0! Half-time not long after as it started to drizzle a bit.

Second half resumed with no changes on Wolves' side. Wolves dominated the early part of the second half with good spells of possession and passing. Bochap made a change and switched out their fast striker for a tricky winger in their no. 7. Uh-oh, more worries for Dansen. Bochap's tactics were almost working as the extra winger on the right often found himself unmarked and up against the overworked Dansen. But luckily Bochap's midfield weren't cohesive enough and more often then not, their passes did not managed to find the free no.7 player. In one of the Wolve's attacking forays, a ball was crossed in from the right wing into the box and as fate would have it the tall Bochap dangerman was deemed by the referee to have handled the ball. It might have been sweet poetic justice as he was the same guy who got the penalty from Fabian the last time we played. Penalty was up and Shawn blasted his shot down the middle to make it 2-0. Time for a tactical change as Bochap made 3 changes bringing on apparantly more experienced players and swtiching to a more attacking formation. With an increased number of attackers, Wolves started to lose the midfield battle. Wolves decided to make some tactical changes of their own and brought on Calvin for BX to help shore up the wings and provide cover for Dansen. From here on, it was all Bochap as Wolves withstood an onslaught of attacks. Bochap had several chances breaking through our defence but spurned the one-on-ones. Gabriel was on the top of his game, keeping out several shots and rushing out to intercept balls. His massive goal kicks also relieved pressure on the Wolves' defence. Seeing the situation, Jack decided to make a final switch which eventually turn out to be the killing stroke. Leonard came off for the rested BX, who took the forward role with Wenjie in a counter attacking 5-4-1. Everytime, Gabriel launches his oal kicks, Bochap were in trouble, with the pacy Wenjie, JJ and BX wreaking havoc on their 3 man defence. The third goal came when a long ball clearance from Wolves bounced towards the Bochap penalty box area. With BX chasing the ball, the Bochap keeper rushed out to try to collect, but hesitated cause of the on rushing BX. His hesitation killed him as the bouncing ball bounced off his head and into the net as he tried to clear. 3-0! A goal opportunity came shortly after when Bochap switched keepers and the new keeper came way out the the box to tryt o collect a loose through ball on the left. with BX and Sebas both casing after the ball, BX managed to latch on to the ball with his pace. He was about 35 yards out, but the goal was open with the keeper totally out of position, but his shot was off target. Wasted chance. But BX was to redeem himself when the ball once again was won in the Wolves' defence and cleared, and the Bochap midfielder failed to control the loose ball. BX latched on to the loose ball and surged forward. Seeing the keeper off the line, he let loose a 30 yard shot that dipped perfectly to score. 4-0! Kudos to Bochap though, as they never gave up even when 4-0 down and continued to pile pressure on Wolve's defence. Gabriel was the star at this point earning the Wolve's first clean sheet when the final whistle blew. Full-time.

Learning Points:
- This was a good game, but positional discipline must be there. Players must stick to their positions and not lose the plot in the heat of the moment.
- Attacking set-pieces need to improve. We had corners and free-kicks that was not made the most of.
- While the winning of the ball was good in this game, keeping possession and short passing accuracy could be improved.
- Wolves' MOM goes to Gabriel. He kept our first cleansheet in the game together with the 5 defenders Jason, PC, Shawn, Dansen and Calvin. His biggest contribution is his massive goal kicks which pegged the Bochap players back and resulted in 2 of our goals.

It's Wolves vs Chinatown revisited. Memories of the near loss comes back to the Wolves as we felt we could have drawn the last game against Chinatown. This time Wolves have a game plan to nullify Chinatown's attacks and it paid off. The match kicked off with the Wolves playing 5 in midfield in order to dominate the midfield, and a modified defence of Dansen and Shawn as centrebacks and Jason and Sebas as fullbacks to counter the height disadvantage and it yielded unexpected results. The early game saw a lot of interruptions in play due to the many number of throw-ins for both sides, neither side getting more possession. After 15 minutes, Wolves settled down earlier and started their passing game. Chinatown never got their passing game going, only seeing strings of passes in spurts. Most of their attacks fizzled out with overhit through balls. Our defensive experiment paid off with all four defenders comfortable with ball at their feet, and managed to pass the ball out of defence and start the Wolves offensive. Chinatown were having problems getting pass Shawn and Dansen, with both providing pace, height and physical strength to defence. Jason had a shaky start being in a new role, but settled in later in the game. Wolves were dominating play and had 5-6 chances but weren't able to convert. Chinatown's keeper was dominant in the area. One of those chances saw a shot saved by The Chinatown keeper, rebound out and and the followup shot saved again, and finally the ball lands on Yu Xiang who took too long with his shot and was blocked. Another chance was when Leonard's silky footwork beat 2 defenders and he was through on goal but his shot was wide. Chinatown had 2-3 chances themselves, but were well handled by Gabriel. Chinatown's break came against the run of play when a seemingly harmless through ball for their number 20 striker should have been intercepted by Dansen, but he hesitated and the striker latched on to the ball, brought into the edge of the box and clinically slot it under Gabriel into the corner. Wolves 0-1 down. Sebas had a knock and Calvin came on. Yu Xiang was having a offday and was taken out with Rahim in. Rahim's inclusiion changed the game completely. With BX running riot on the right, Leonard and JJ wrecking havoc in the middle, Rahim provided the additional chaos to Chinatown's defence on the left with his pace, speed of turn and off ball running, thus creating more space. Half time.

Second half resumed, and Wolves dominated possession. Chinatown switched from a 4-4-2 to a defensive 5-2-3 formation in an effort to defend the lead. Wolves though with greater possession, found it hard to break down the Chinatown defence. Wolves' attacking midfielders were also too focused on scoring and forgot to distribute the ball wide and instead played linear straight forward passes which was cut out easily. One chance came when BX found himself free on the left and a free ball got to him in the box. But he went for power and blasted the ball straight at the Chinatown keeper. The pattern of play continued with Wolves dominating, without finishing. Wolves' equaliser came when Wenjie ran into the box with the ball and the Chinatown keeper came out to claim it. It was a light touch but Wenjie felt it and went down. Ref blew for the penalty which was well dispatched by Wenjie. 1-1! Alot of the attacking play started to go through the right wing where Rahim was, but by full time, nothing new was added to the scoreline. Full time.

Notes:
- One positive to take away is that our corner defending training paid off as we didn't concede from corners. However, attacking from corners, we still need to apply what we did in training and make the runs from outside the box.
- Delivery of freekicks and corner kicks were very poor. We need to do much more with the set-pieces chances we were given. We had 3-4 freekicks and nothing came out of it.
- Midfielders must keep their composure and widen their vision of play to include the wings. Once distribute to the wings, focus will be on the wings and thus create space in the centre, which the midfielders need to learn to exploit.
- Well done by Jason and Sebas as full backs, as their diagonal passes gives us a new weapon and dimension to our game to spread play and stretch opponent's defence. But Jason needs to learn to gel with the defenders and learn to improve his positioning as well as adapt to the offside trap.
- Finishing needs to be more clinical. With the chances we had, we must increase our finishing ratio to at least 50%, or at least hit the target.
- MOM goes to Rahim as his inclusion changed the complexion of the game and had an immediate positive impact.

--------------------------------------------------
League Game:
There is a league game this week. We will be playing against Bochap FC.

Notes: Previous result was a 1-0 loss. It was a game we should have won. To refresh the memory, this game was played at Eastview last time round, the pitch was short and wide, the opponents and ref came 30mins late, fabian conceded the penalty, opponents made of mostly malays with afew chinese and an eurasian player. They quarrelled amongst themselves and seems disjointed. Their dangerman is their central midfielder who is also their playmaker who won the penalty the last time around. Their mode of attack has no tactical plans, but they had most of the play involved at our left flank. They resorted to long shots when they ran out of ideas, and we caught them offside tons of time. They do not have very fast players but they can dominate the aerial game. Their defence has trouble handling players who are physical. Some of their players are experienced and know hows to run down the clock when leading. Their keeper is not very stable.

To win this game, defence have to play offside, and keep the middle tight. They will attack through the wings, so our fullbacks need to be alert. Midfield wise, possession and short passing is the key. We dominated the game when we kept a passing game the last time round. Avoiding high/long balls where they dominate the air will be to our advantage. We need to attack through the flanks more. Their fullbacks are the weak link, lacking pace and are easy to dribble past. Our attackers need to shoot more even from distance as their keeper is not that firm. They lack tactical acuity, so diagonal balls from defence to our wingers to free space is an alternative method to spread play together with playing short passes in midfield.
